FOX 8: New NOPD Police Chief Named

(WVUE/FOX 8) Mayor LaToya Cantrell named a new NOPD superintendent, selecting Shaun Ferguson to replace Chief Michael Harrison.

Superintendent Ferguson has been with the NOPD for 21 years. He joined the department in 1995.

According to our partners NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune, Ferguson’s first commander assignment was in the 4th district, which polices Algiers and has often been the starting ground for lieutenants who have been promoted to commander.

Ferguson was promoted to that job in March 2014, near the end of former superintendent Ronal Serpas’ tenure. He worked for a time as a supervisor in the homicide division.

Harrison accepted a position in Baltimore, Maryland as the city’s police commissioner. He served as NOPD superintendent for four years and has been with the department for almost 30 years.
