Just days after being sentenced to serve a decade in a federal lockup, a man who went on a racist post-Katrina rant in New Orleans and shot three black men is dead.

The chief investigator for the Plaquemines Parish Coroner's Office tells The Advocate that 56-year-old Roland Bourgeois appears to have died from natural causes, though his death five days after his Valentine's Day sentencing remains under investigation.

Authorities say he was being housed at the parish jail and had "serious pre-existing medical conditions."

Bourgeois admitted to being part of a vigilante neighborhood patrol that committed itself to stopping looters in the Algiers Point area, alleging that blacks were tearing up New Orleans after Katrina's landfall and levee failures in the city.
