The New Orleans Advocate is reporting more than half of the water leaving the Sewerage & Water Board treatment plant may be going into the ground instead of into homes.

The findings are from a consultant with Colorado-based Freeman LLC, hired to study the problems plaguing the Sewerage & Water Board from 2008 to 2017. According to the consultant, leaks could be responsible for nearly 82 million gallons of water being lost each day.

Executive Director Ghassan Korban of the Sewerage & Water Board responded by saying the amount of water being wasted due to the old and outdated pipes and system is unacceptable.
