With the threat of the Mississippi River rising further in the near future, the Army Corps of Engineers is in the process of closing more than 200 bays of the Bonnet Carre Spillway opened earlier.

The first of the bays were opened late last month after the water hit a level requiring the diversion of river water into Lake Pontchartrain to head off downstream flooding.

At its peak, 206 bays of the spillway were opened to keep the flow of water from exceeding 1.25 million cubic feet per second.
