Louisiana is a step closer to the legalization of sports betting in the state, something Mississippi has already done.
A Senate judiciary committee voted three-to-one approval yesterday of a bill authored by Republican Senator Danny Martiny of Metairie. The wagering on professional and college sports would be limited to the state's riverboat and land-based casinos and four racetracks.
Even if the legislation clears the General Assembly and is signed by the governor, voters will actually decide the fate of sports betting in each of the state's parishes, possibly as early as this October.
