A bill is advancing in the Louisiana Legislature to increase the legal smoking age in the state from 18 to 21.

The measure cleared the House Health and Welfare Committee yesterday and proposes stricter reporting requirements in an attempt to keep retailers from selling smokes, including vaping devices, to underage customers.

The fiscal note attached to the bill estimates the age change will reduce state revenue by around $5 million.
