Bill Advances In Louisiana Legislature To Increase Minimum Wage

Louisiana State Capitol Building

The full Senate will soon be considering legislation to boost the minimum wage in Louisiana to $9.00 an hour, up a $1.75 from the federally-mandated minimum.

The bill, authored by Senator Troy Carter of New Orleans, cleared the Senate Labor Committee yesterday on a five-to-one vote.

Even if it wins the required two-thirds legislative approval because it's a proposed constitutional amendment, it still has to pass muster with voters in the state.
