Harahan is looking to triple the budget for the fire department by charging both residents and businesses more for their water bills.
The ordinance was proposed by City Councilman Jason Asbill and proposes residents pay an extra $40 and businesses pay an extra $60 on their bi-monthly water bills.
Some residents say the fee is more than their water bill itself, but the fire department is arguing both they and the public are in grave danger because of the lack of money.
The City Council will vote on the ordinance on May 23rd.
