Crews have started to place a barge in Bayou Chene leading up to the opening of the Morganza Spillway.
Officials say the barge is meant to act as a temporary flood control. The barge will help by keeping backwater flooding in the Atchafalaya Basin from spilling into Assumption, St. Martin and St. Mary parishes.
The barge placement comes as officials announced yesterday the Morganza Spillway will open for only the third time in history.
