Gov. Edwards Signs Fetal Abortion Law

Torrential Rains Bring Historic Floods To Southern Louisiana

Louisiana's Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards has signed a strict abortion ban into law.

The new law prohibits abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is usually after about six weeks of pregnancy.

Lawmakers passed the bill without an exception for rape or incest, though it does allow for exceptions if the pregnant woman's life is at risk.

The law will not go into effect right away. It will only take effect if a similar law in Mississippi is upheld in federal court.

Edwards ran as a "pro-life" Democrat and is running for re-election.
