Louisiana is poised to become the fifth state to approve a fetal heartbeat abortion ban.
Lawmakers passed a bill yesterday that would prohibit women from terminating a pregnancy once a fetal heartbeat is detected. The state House rejected an amendment that would've provided exceptions for rape or incest.
Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards, elected in 2015 as a "pro-life" candidate, has indicated that he would sign the bill.
Louisiana is also considering a bill to let voters decide on a constitutional amendment against abortion rights.
