Morganza Spillway Operation Delayed To June 6

Army Corps To Open Spillway In Louisiana To Ease Flooding

The Army Corps of Engineers announced Thursday a delay in the start of operations at the Morganza Spillway.

Originally planned for June 2, officials now say any openings of bays on the spillway would begin on June 6.

The delay is due to a change in the forecast of when the Mississippi River is expected to hit 60 feet at the structure from June 5 to June 9.

"The Army Corps of Engineers only intends to operate the structure when needed as to not put additional water into the Atchafalaya Basin," read a statement released Thursday afternoon.
