Governor John Bel Edwards says President Trump has approved his federal disaster declaration request as the state continues to fight flooding.

The approval is reportedly for emergency protective measures which includes direct federal assistance under the Public Assistance program as well as federal help from FEMA.

The governor says FEMA will cover 75% of the costs as it assists Assumption, Catahoula, Concordia, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, Rapides, St. Landry, St. Martin, Terrebonne and West Feliciana parishes.

He calls it "an important first step" as the state prepares for the expected rise in water.
