The owners of the famous Gene's Po-Boys at the corner of St. Claude and Elysian Fields Avenues say they will be closing down the restaurant at the end of July.

The shop was founded in 1968 and is closing because the iconic pink building has been sold to make way for condominiums.

The building was first listed for sale in March not long after the death of a family member who was next in line to take over the business.

Owner Eugene Theriot said sales at the restaurant had dwindled over the years in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
