St. Bernard May Lose Flood Management Systems

Flood management systems may be no more in St. Bernard Parish.

The Flood Protection Authority says it will turn over operations of the pumping and draining systems to the parish on July 1st even if St. Bernard cannot financially support it.

This comes after recent negotiations between the FPA, the parish and the state failed.

FPA officials say they have been trying to relinquish the system for years but haven't been able to because of the financial situation of the Lake Borgne Basin Levee District.

Due to the district's near bankruptcy and a failed tax millage proposal, the FPA has decided not to wait any longer.

However, the authority will step in if severe weather threatens the area.
