Louisiana will be recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day this year on October 14th.

Baley Champagne, 27, said she wrote a letter to Governor John Bel Edwards a few weeks ago requesting the state to officially recognize the day.

Governor Edwards accepted the request and said it's the most recent effort his administration is taking to increase the visibility of Native Americans in the state.

The move comes as a growing number of cities across the country are opting to move away from Columbus Day.
