A new study shows that New Orleans-area second graders cannot read at grade level.

According to the local tutoring group STAIR, almost 70% of second graders cannot read on grade level.

STAIR is a free one-on-one tutoring program that has been teaching reading skills and self-esteem to children since 1985.

Program director Shannon Able says they are making efforts to change those numbers but are in dire need for more volunteer tutors.

Locals who are looking to help can visit the STAIRnola.org website for more information.
