More Details Emerge About Bayou Steel's Debt

Bankruptcy

New documents show the Bayou Steel Group owed more than $20 million to its creditors when it shut down this week.

In court documents released yesterday, the company's board of directors authorized the bankruptcy on October 1st without advance notice to its employees.

Several laid-off workers at the Bayou Steel Plant in LaPlace have hired an attorney to look into if the company followed federal guidelines about notifying employees about layoffs.

According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, workers are entitled to 60-days' notice before their jobs are terminated.
