State Lawmakers Back Belle Chasse Bridge Replacement Plan

State lawmakers are giving the final approval to a multi-million-dollar plan to replace a 50-year-old movable bridge and tunnel in a southeastern parish.

Members of the state House and Senate transportation committees voted just before the weekend in favor of the $162 million Belle Chasse project.

Under the arrangement, a private firm will build a new bridge in exchange for the longtime revenue stream, where parish residents would pay 60-cents per trip across the overpass.

State transportation officials said the new bridge is expected to open in April 2024.
