Westwego City Council Rejects Chinese Companies Bid For New Chemical Plant

The Westwego City Council is rejecting a bid to locate a Chinese company's chemical plant in the city.

During a hearing on the project last night, the council made a surprise move and voted to deny the motion to allow the Wanhua Chinese Chemical Company to build a storage facility on the Kinder Morgan industrial site.

Westwego Mayor Joe Peoples said during the company's presentation on the project, it became clear it wasn't good for the city, and the vote was held rather than drag the process out.

Peoples said the vote doesn't mean chemical companies are not welcome, but that they will be examined on a case by case basis.
