Investigation Into Check Theft From Gretna USPS Drop Box Underway

Sending Letter

An investigation is now underway after someone stole over $200,000 worth of checks from a drop box at the Gretna Post Office.

Federal Authorities said yesterday that at least 40 people had reported missing mortgage and car payments, along with other packages that had been dropped off in the boxes in front of the main post office.

The Postal Inspector says some of the missing mail was found in a nearby dumpster.

Local police are now assisting the Department of Homeland Security to determine if someone other than a postal employee was able to access the mailboxes the items were stolen from.
