Officials are investigating reports of a mysterious sonic-boom like noise heard in the southern part of Tangipahoa Parish on Monday evening.
Social media posts began surfacing after 9 p.m. describing the noise like a loud but sinister thunderclap that shook some people's homes and rattled windows.
Law enforcement began patrolling the area around where the most reports about the noise originated but were unable to determine what may have caused it.
A sonic boom is created when an object travels through the air faster than the speed of sound and can be loud enough to cause vibrations strong enough to damage structures on the ground.
