Engineers are working on plans to begin opening the Bonnet Carre Spillway in St. Charles Parish as early as this Friday.

The Army Corps of Engineers announced yesterday that new water level projections for the Mississippi River could force them to open the spillway.

A recent report predicts the Mississippi River could reach above 17.5 feet at the Carrollton gage and increase the flow of the river to more than 1.2 million cubic feet per second.

The Army Corps says if they have to open the spillway, it will be closed off from public viewing, and three spillway boat launches will shut down on Thursday at noon.
