A Louisiana motor oil and antifreeze maker is turning over part of its production line to help get hand sanitizer to its customers.

The owners of Smitty Supply in Roseland said yesterday they began converting a portion of its facility about three weeks ago shortly after the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau lifted federal restrictions on producing hand sanitizer.

Smitty Supply employs around 400 people and has already shipped out several truckloads of sanitizer.

Chief Operating officer Bryan Boudreaux says right now their disinfecting sanitizer is in liquid form, and they are working on getting FDA approval to begin adding a thickening agent to make it into a gel.
