Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is free after being released from federal prison early because of COVID-19.

Nagin's attorneys confirmed his release yesterday, saying he was granted a compassionate early release under a new program to reduce prison populations during the pandemic.

The now 63-year-old Nagin served as New Orleans mayor from 2002 to 2010 and later was convicted in 2014 on 20 counts of fraud, corruption, and bribery.

Before being granted early release, Nagin had been scheduled to be freed in March of 2023.
