New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says it is too early to commit to holding Mardi Gras in 2021 because of the coronavirus.
Cantrell responded to reporter's questions yesterday, saying data from health professionals about the status of the pandemic will dictate the dates for large gatherings to be considered safe to the public.
Several festivals have already canceled their 2020 events, and Cantrell has recommended against holding any type of mass gathering in the summer or fall.
Health experts say gatherings are still an unacceptable risk because out-of-state tourists could bring the virus back to New Orleans and wipe out the progress that has been made since social distancing began.
