Residents across the New Orleans area are reporting sightings of an invasive pest known as the Formosan subterranean termite.
Photos began appearing on social media this week, including a post from the Slidell Police Department, who issued an all-points bulletin for the bug for the crime of home invasion.
Entomologists say New Orleans has the worst population of the insect in the world, and the swarms being spotted now are young colonies looking for a place to nest.
Nicknamed the super-termite, the insect can consume wood at a rate of 13-ounces a day and cause an estimated $300 million in damage every year.
