The state Senate is advancing a bill that would change how car accident lawsuits are handled against insurance companies and other businesses.
On Monday, lawmakers in the Senate voted 29-8 to change how damage claims are processed with more heading to jury trials where lawyers will argue before more than just a judge for damages.
The bill will also cap certain costs, limit when insurance companies can be sued directly, and increase the window for settlement negotiations.
The measure will now head to the House for debate with supporters saying it will lower insurance premiums, while opponents say it will take money away from people who need to cover medical expenses.
