Mayor Cantrell Defends Strict Coronavirus Rules

Mayor LaToya Cantrell is backing her move to enact stricter coronavirus rules than the rest of the state as New Orleans reopens.

In an interview Tuesday, Mayor Cantrell said that she established the new regulations because the Big Easy needs to strongly bill itself as safe in the coming months in order to revive its stagnant tourism industry.

In addition, Cantrell said that the city's tourism industry has struggled mightily with the cancellation of major events and hotel stays due to the coronavirus.

The message came as City Hall departments were preparing for the possibility that they would have to slash their budgets if revenue does not pick up in the coming months.
