Officials say the man who was killed after pointing a gun at a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy was a survivor of the Hard Rock Hotel collapse.
Officials said yesterday that 35-year-old Modesto Reyes fled from a traffic stop on Wednesday night near Ames Boulevard and the West Bank Expressway.
Authorities say Reyes jumped from his vehicle and fled on foot at Eiseman Avenue before pointing a gun at deputies who then shot him.
Reyes' family says he was a welder and escaped from inside the Hard Rock when it began to collapse last October.
