The Louisiana Department of Health reported an additional 1,383 COVID-19 cases Thursday, bringing the total number of cases in the state since the beginning of the pandemic to 61,561.

State health officials said 94% of the new cases came from community spread and 39% involved those age 29 and younger.

Most of the tests were collected between June 25 and July 2.

Hospitalizations also continued to rise, with 41 new reports bringing the total to 840. Of those, 91 are on ventilators, an increase of 7 from Wednesday.

LDH also reported 17 more deaths blamed on the coronavirus, bringing that total to 3,147.

As cases continue to increase, leaders in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Jefferson Parish have made wearing masks mandatory while in public and especially inside businesses.
