New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says she may have to put new restrictions in place if COVID-19 numbers continue to increase.

During a press conference on Thursday, Cantrell said actions taken by the public over the holiday weekend could directly influence students returning to school in-person this fall.

Health Director Dr. Jennifer Avengo added that New Orleans is now seeing increased daily average cases, and 90% of them are coming from community spread.

Officials say contract tracing is showing the virus being spread at large gatherings and parties, so they are urging residents to avoid gathering in large crowds over the 4th of July weekend.
