Governor John Bel Edwards is effectively shutting down bars and requiring masks as the state's number of COVID-19 infections surge.

In a Saturday press conference, the Democratic governor said it was clear the state's current restrictions weren't enough.

"As recently as June 19, Louisiana was #10 in the country for per capita cases. Today, we're #3," Edwards noted.

Louisiana had more than 2,000 new cases Friday and Saturday, and hospitalizations are on the rise.

People in the Pelican State will now be required to wear a mask inside businesses, although some parishes could be exempt if they meet certain numbers. At this time, Edwards said only three parishes currently meet that criteria.

Bars can still offer curbside pickup but are closed to in-person consumption.

The new order takes effect Monday.
