Effective today, everyone in the state of Louisiana over the age of 8 is required to wear a mask in public, unless they have a medical exemption.

The mandate went into place at Midnight after Governor John Bel Edwards announced new restrictions over the weekend.

Bars in the state are now only open for curbside or to-go service, and indoor social gatherings are limited to a total of 50 people.

The mask mandate applies both indoors and outdoors for those who are less than 6 feet away from someone they don't live with normally.

Health officials reported over 1,300 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, bringing Louisiana's total to 78,122 since the pandemic began.

Under the current rate of infection, the state has an estimated nine days before treatment centers are at 100% capacity.
