A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy is behind bars after he was accused of stealing cash from a lost wallet while putting it into evidence.

Officials say Justin Vappie was booked Monday with malfeasance in office.

According to reports, a Good Samaritan turned the wallet into the sheriff's office and Vappie was sent to recover the wallet from the citizen but when authorities logged it into evidence, they said cash was missing.

The 34-year-old has since been fired and booked into the Gretna jail.
