Terrebonne Parish Schools Superintendent Philip Martin says the start of the upcoming school year is being delayed due to COVID-19.

Martin announced on Tuesday that the school year will now begin after Labor Day on September 8.

Martin said Terrebonne Parish has the highest infection rate of the coronavirus per 100,000 people in the entire state, and the decision to delay school was made in the best interest of the community.

St. Tammany Parish has also announced a delayed start to the upcoming school year, with Jefferson Parish currently discussing a possible delay as well.
