The running total of reported COVID-19 cases in Louisiana jumped by over 3,600 cases Tuesday, though state health officials noted nearly half came from a backlog dating back to the end of May.

The Louisiana Department of Health said the latest total of cases stood at 124,461 after the additional of 3,614 cases and the daily removal of newly identified duplicated and out-of-state cases.

1,741 cases are from a backlog with collection dates from as far back as May 28. The rest were collected between July 28 and August 4.

LDH said 96% of the cases reported on Tuesday came from community spread with 35% involving those aged 29 and under.

While hospitalizations fell by 9 to 1,487 the number of patients needing ventilators increased by 10 to 240.

The state also reported an additional 27 deaths, bringing that count to 3,937.
