The City Planning Commission is giving the green light to rename Jefferson Davis Parkway.

The commission voted 8-0 on Tuesday to rename the parkway after former Xavier University President Norman Francis.

Francis led Xavier for nearly half a century, was active in New Orleans' civil rights movement and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The renaming must now be approved by the City Council.

The name change comes as the city continues to re-evaluate the names of streets across the city with the goal of replacing Confederates and white supremacists.
