The Mandeville Police Department says all officers will be required to participate in a new racial training program.

Officials said yesterday that beginning in October, a new program called RITE, which stands for Racial Intelligence Training and Engagement, will be part of every officer's mandatory training.

Officer Eddie Vanison is one of two staff members certified to teach the RITE course and said emotions drive behavior, and officers going into the streets angry will only harm the public.

Vanison added that his Department has always and will always try to avoid situations where they lose the public's trust.
