The City of New Orleans is passing a new ordinance that will limit the NOPD's use of tear gas except in rare circumstances.

At a council meeting last night, the measure to almost completely ban the use of tear gas passed with a unanimous vote.

The NOPD came under criticism last June when SWAT officers launched gas canisters into a crowd of protesters on the Crescent City Connection.

Under the new ordinance, New Orleans Police can now only use tear gas to remove a barricaded suspect or if there is a threat of imminent loss of life or serious injury.
