Delta Approaching Yucatan As Major Cat 4 Hurricane, Then Enter Gulf

The National Hurricane Center says Delta has strengthened into a category four as it approaches the Yucatan peninsula.

Delta is expected to weaken slightly to category three strength as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico towards a possible Louisiana landfall. Some further weakening is possible as Delta encounters cooler water temperatures and wind shear, but it is still forecast to make landfall as a hurricane late Friday night or early Thursday morning.

"There is an increasing likelihood of life-threatening storm surge and dangerous hurricane-force winds, especially along the coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi, beginning on Friday. Residents in these areas should ensure they have their hurricane plan in place and monitor updates to the forecast," said the NHC.
