The New Orleans City Council is working on rewriting an ordinance to help protect Mardi Gras krewes that opt-out next year due to COVID-19.

Officials said yesterday that they want to make sure the krewes that don't roll in 2021 can keep their spots in 2022.

Councilwoman Kristin Palmer added that the city is not canceling next year's Mardi Gras and is simply moving forward to protect future events.

So far, only two krewes have opted out of next year's Carnival season, but the city is concerned more may have to follow if the pandemic does not improve.
