New Orleans Mayor Says City Could Have Mask Fines

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says residents could be facing fines for not wearing a mask or other COVID-19 violations.

Cantrell spoke yesterday about the city's plans to move to the final stage of its Phase 3 re-opening, which could see police issuing fines of $500 for violating safety guidelines.

The fine could face legal challenges, but city officials say they can be issued under the Louisiana Homeland Security and Emergency Assistance and Disaster Act.

Cantrell said those who cannot afford to pay fines of that amount would be given alternatives like community service instead.
