A 21-year veteran of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff Office has been fired and is now behind bars.

Police say Shannon Sims was booked Wednesday on allegations that he unjustifiably used pepper spray on a man while responding to a report of a disturbance at a Marrero business.

According to reports, Sims was dispatched to the 7400 block of Lapalco Boulevard Tuesday for a reported disturbance.

When he arrived at the scene, he came in contact with the unidentified man and for unknown reasons, sprayed him with pepper-spray.

Sims then failed to get medical attention for the man, document the incident in a written report or notify his supervisor, all of which is required by Sheriff's Office policy.

He now faces one count of malfeasance in office.
