The head of the watchdog Metropolitan Crime Commission is issuing a warning to city officials.

On Monday, Rafael Goyeneche cautioned that the city's sharp rise in violent crime this year could get worse if Mayor LaToya Cantrell's administration continues furloughing police officers.

According to MCC's analysis, the city had registered 168 murders through the end of October, which is a jump from the 90 recorded at the same time last year.

Goyeneche argued those trends had no chance at reversing with officers taking six unpaid days off through the end of this year.

The topic is expected to be discussed at the NOPD's 2021 budget hearing on Thursday.
