The city of New Orleans is lifting furloughs for public safety employees that have been in place since last October.

Officials announced yesterday that New Orleans police officers, firefighters, Juvenile Justice Intervention Center employees, and EMS are no longer subject to the layoffs.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell released a statement saying the city is still under the same financial strain that led to the furloughs but lifting them was necessary to maintain public safety.

New Orleans ended 2020 with almost 200 homicides, a nearly 60% increase compared to 2019.
