Kindergarten may become mandatory in Louisiana under a new proposed bill.

Senate Education Committee Chairman Cleo Fields has filed Senate Bill 10, which will be debated during the 2021 regular legislative session that starts on April 12.

State law requires school districts to offer kindergarten but attendance is not mandated.

The bill would require kindergarten for children who turn five on or before September 30 of the year when classes begin.
