Former Gymnastics Coach Charged With Human Trafficking Dies By Suicide

Hours after former U.S. Olympic gymnastics coach John Geddert was charged with two dozen counts relating to sexual abuse of female athletes, he reportedly died by suicide. Geddert was the coach of the U.S. woman's Olympic gymnastics team in 2012 when they won the gold medal in the London games.

According to WLNSGeddert was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Thursday (February 25).

"My office has been notified that the body of John Geddert was found late this afternoon after taking his own life. This is a tragic end to a tragic story for everyone involved," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, Nessel held a press conference announcing that Geddert was being charged with 20 counts of human trafficking and forced labor resulting in injury, one count of racketeering, two counts of criminal sexual conduct, and one count of lying to police.

Authorities began investigating Geddert following the sentencing hearing of Larry Nassar, who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing ten minors and was sentenced to 175 years in jail. He is currently serving a 60-year sentence for child pornography in a Florida prison. During the hearing, several of Nassar's victims recounted stories of physical and emotional abuse they endured from Geddert.
