State officials are reporting over $400 million in unemployment benefits last year went to ineligible recipients.

On Monday, the Legislative Auditor said between January and September 2020, money was given to over 97,000 people who were not in line to receive payments.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission said the error was due in part to a major surge in claims and a delay in second-quarter wage reporting.

The Commission is currently working to recover improper payments and identify instances of fraud.
