A state legislative committee is advancing a measure to allow voters to decide on a riverboat casino project on Lake Pontchartrain near Slidell.
Committee members approved a parish-wide referendum on the plan yesterday, which endorses a bill that overturns a 1996 law banning casino gambling in St. Tammany Parish.
Peninsula Pacific Entertainment has offered to build a 250-room hotel and casino east of I-10 near the Oak Harbor subdivision.
The Slidell City Council is against the casino, while the St. Tammany Parish Council has offered their support.
